...please note that we don't stick to a set itinerary as AQR choose the best ride for the group and weather conditions. However this will give you an idea of what you can expect on an AQR-Luchon Pyrenees Mountain Bike week.
SATURDAY: Airport Transfers to and from Toulouse Airport. There will be a welcome evening meal and an opportunity to ask your guides any questions or concerns you may have about the week ahead.
AM: The Shepherds Ride...An introduction to switchbacks and some of the natural off-piste forest trails we have here in Luchon. Ride single track that has been used by local shepherds for hundreds of years.
PICNIC LUNCH: A relaxing lunch and café stop beside Lac Badech where you will see local Luchonaise fisherman and gliders taking off at the aerodrome opposite.
PM: Destination Unknown...a beautiful ride towards Spain with stunning views of the high mountains that overlook Luchon. Mostly single track that very few people know about as we always have these trails to ourselves.
AM: The Oo Ride...A gentle start beneath the trees on the Superbagneres before descending into the village of Oo. From here there are several trail options for different abilities and fitness levels, all finishing with a single track descent down to the river where we will regroup for lunch.
PICNIC LUNCH: A relaxing lunch on the grassy banks of the river before a well deserved coffee and ice cream at the village café.
PM: The Superbagneres...We will head back towards Luchon and give you your first taster of some of the super fun descents the Superbagneres that overlooks Luchon has to offer. The afternoon will end with a cheeky post ride drink at one of our favourite local bars.
AM: The Benque Bends Ride...Today we head higher and will find ourselves above the tree line. The descent before lunch offers single track in all it's many sizes, from fast and flowy to tight and technical...you can choose the line suitable for your level of ability.
PICNIC LUNCH: No café stops today unfortunately, but a lunch with a stunning view where you're likely to see Pyrenean vultures and local wild life.
PM: Black Rock...Following lunch we will head to a different corner of the valley where the terrain changes from one trail to the next. You won't be disappointed when we hit 'Black Rock', an old AQR favourite since we started in Luchon 15 years ago. In fact 20 years ago it was used for training by some of the French legends of Down hill such as Cedric Gracia and Anne-Caroline Chausson.
WEDNESDAY: Day off
On your day off we offer an optional 2hr mountain bike technique & skills coaching session from 10am-12pm or a stretch, core and relaxation class with Kate. We can also recommend a variety of activities in the area.
AM: The Spanish Ride Part 1...as the name suggests we're heading into Spain. This ride is breath taking with incredible views at the top of the first climb down towards Vielha in Spain and Luchon. You will meet friendly mountain ponies and birds of prey gliding on the thermals. The descent will drop us off at the Hospice de France where we will enjoy a well deserved beer or another ice cream with local donkeys for company and great views towards the Port de Venasque.
PICNIC LUNCH: We have chosen a shady picnic area for lunch before the Long descent home back to Luchon.
PM: The Spanish Ride Part 2...95% descending on natural unspoilt trails with switchbacks and fantastic single track. We will also make our way across the new suspension bridge that now gives us access to even more trails as we head back towards Luchon.
AM: The Ridge Ride...An incredible ride to finish the week on. Following an uplift to the top of the Port de Bales (we do offer a climbing option for those who want to use pedal power). AQR has 3 versions of this ride that Ian will select based on the weather and group ability. All 3 options offer amazing views from above the tree line and then a variety of natural undulating trails down to our mountain lunch stop.
PICNIC LUNCH: No cafes in this area as we're high in the mountains and no one ever complains with the lunch time views we have on offer.
PM: The Ridge Ride Part 2...Descending all the way back to Luchon on natural unspoilt trails weaving in and out of the forests and stopping only for brakes to cool down where we can take a moment to take in the endless stunning views. The highlight of this descent is riding the ridge a fast, fun and flowy trail with massive grin factor all the way down!
FAREWELL MEAL: Enjoy a celebratory drink in town, followed by dinner at one of our favourite restaurants.
SATURDAY: Time to head back home...AQR will provide their complimentary airport transfer service back to Toulouse Airport.
